The
Photography
Game

Post 16 resource:

An extended, independent, research and design project for Year 12 students

From Jon Nicholls, Thomas Tallis School
Preparations for Unit 3: The Personal Investigation can take many forms. I have found that there is always a lull in the period following the Unit 2 controlled assessment as students prepare for their other Year 12 exams, inevitably missing the odd lesson. Added to this is the issue of other art and design exams, marking and moderation which can be disruptive to normal lessons.

This project is something of an experiment. Rather than delve straight into Unit 3, this year we are challenging them to think about photography in the form of a game. There are two reasons for this:

  1. We intend to prepare them for Unit 3 by using the context of Surrealism (and subsequent artists/photographers who have been influenced by some of the ideas associated with the Surrealists). The first idea on which we intend to focus is the role that chance or indeterminacy plays in photography.
  2. We hope that setting the students a relatively short, intense, mini design project that encourages them to think imaginatively about what they already know (and can find out) about the big ideas or Threshold Concepts in photography might be an engaging way to begin their preparations for Unit 3.
I have included here downloadable versions of the Guide document that we have produced, a planning form, an evaluation form and a link to the developing Pinterest Board of resources. Below you can see some images of my Year 12 class playing their games and pages from their critical studies books. In the spirit of modelling and collaboration, Chris Francis and I invented our own game called #photopedagogy which uses email and social media to bat images back and forth. You can find out more about it in this blog post and how we played a mass game with delegates at the NSEAD conference this summer (2015).
